Chapter 18
âThanks for doing this,â Helen smiled at Kitty as she loaded up a silver tray with cups and a teapot. âAgnes normally would do any room service runs, but sheâs taking care of William. And my legs arenât what they were,â she chuckled. âOh,â she frowned at the tray and then hustled over to the counter, pulling out a large cake box. She cut a slice of the red velvet cake nestled within, placed it on a saucer, and added it to the tray.
âWith what that poor woman is going through, sheâll need something sweet to keep her energy levels up. You tell her thatâs compliments from me, all right?â
âI will Helen; youâre too kind,â Kitty smiled.
âOh, go on, get on with you,â she hustled Kitty towards the door. âAnd if you bring the tea tray back right away; Iâll have you a cup waiting with a slice for helping me out.â
âThank you, Helen,â Kitty grinned.
Kitty took the tea tray through the empty dining room and wound her way along the castleâs corridor, up the staircase, and towards the guest rooms. It was a stroke of good luck, she mused, that Mrs. Haynes had ordered tea in her room. Sheâd never had a chance to say much to her, and she was keen to see how she was after the events of the night before.
She reached the room door and rapped on it lightly as she called out, âRoom service Mrs. Haynes.â
There was the sound of someone shuffling in the room, and a second later, the latch was turned. The face of Madalyn Haynes appeared at the door. Kitty tried not to stare at the woman. Sheâd expected her to be, well, disheveled, but Madalyn Haynes looked like sheâd just stepped out of a salon. Her dark hair was immaculately styled in big waves, and her face fully made up. Although, Kitty thought she had been extra heavy with the concealer around her eyes.
Madalyn stepped back from the door, leaving it wide open for Kitty to step in and walked over to a chair by the coffee table. As she sat down, her voluminous pink chiffon dressing gown billowed around her. Kitty kicked the door closed with her foot and walked to the table, setting out the tea, cups, and cake. Madalyn glanced at the dessert.
âFrom Helen, our cook, Mrs. Haynes, with her compliments and condolences,â Kitty explained.
Mrs. Haynes glanced up at her. âThank her, please,â she almost snapped.
âYes, Mrs. Haynes. I certainly will. Would you like me to pour?â
Mrs. Haynes looked her up and down, âYou arenât the girl from the restaurant, are you? The one Raymond hit on?â
âNo Mrs. Haynes,â Kitty shook her head. âIâm afraid I never really met your husband, beyond passing him some tissues when someone accidently spilled a drink on him.â
Mrs. Haynes sighed and seemed to suddenly relax into her chair. âForgive me,â she smiled a little. âRaymond was rather fond of pretty girls, and well, itâs uncomfortable meeting them.â Kitty nodded.
âPlease, please do pour and sit,â Mrs.
